Three suspects are facing charges for following an investigation into an alleged fraud ring that was targeting seniors in Durham and across the GTA.
According to the DRPS, more than 70 incidents of a “grandparent scam” are being investigated across across the region. In each case, a senior victim received a phone call from a person purporting to be a lawyer for their grandchild.
“The suspect would tell the victim their grandchild had been involved in a car accident injuring a pregnant female and $9,000 was required as bail. The suspect would then arrange for a ‘bondsman’ or courier to attend the home to pick up the money,” reads a media release from police.
“After the money was received the senior victim would receive another phone call advising the female and/or baby had died and more money would be required.”
DRPS would like to remind residents who receive any unanticipated requests for money to be extremely cautious and speak to a family member or trusted advisor for support.
Investigators have connected the three suspects to at least seven incidents in Durham Region dating back to November 2021, police say.
