The community has rallied for a Brock Township cyclist that was hit by a vehicle and left at the scene of the collision.
An online fundraiser in support of Derek Virgo – who sustained multiple injuries in a collision on Sanford Road in Uxbridge on March 26 – has raised more than $45,000 thus far.
Virgo and his family have been blown away by the support.
“The amount of love and support we have received over the past few days has been the best kind of overwhelming. I don’t know how to find the words that would express how we feel,” reads an update on the GoFundMe page.
“But I want you to know that every message, email, phone call and DM (direct message) – I have read them and I have shared them with Derek – and there is no doubt in my mind that each and every one of them has contributed to his recovery.”
According to the DRPS, paramedics were called the collision scene, roughly 300 metres west of Concession Road 3, around 6 a.m. Virgo was rushed to a local hospital before being transferred to a Toronto trauma centre.
Despite initially being listed in critical condition, he has since returned home to begin the long road to recovery.
“We feel the support, the positivity, the encouragement and everyone’s sincere belief that if anyone can do this, it’s Derek. With no doubt in our minds,” the update reads.
“The community has come together and taken the most horrific, tragic situation and turned it into the opportunity to show Derek what an undeniable impact he has made on every single person he has ever met. Like I said, I don’t think words will ever express the gratitude we feel. But hopefully this is a start.”
