Public still waiting for answers on shooting death of child by police

Nearly a year later after the tragic shooting death of a one-year-old boy by police in Kawartha Lakes, few details have been released by the SIU.

The organization released a brief update on the case Tuesday (Nov. 23).

“The SIU is reviewing the FBI’s forensic report and continues to actively investigate this tragic case. The SIU understands the public interest in the results; however, as is our process with all ongoing SIU cases, the Unit does not release details that could jeopardize the integrity of the investigation,” the statement reads.

Back in Feburary, the SIU noted that police gunfire was responsible for the death of the child.

“Upon receipt and review of additional forensic evidence in this case, including the results of the postmortem examination performed on a child, and reports prepared by the Centre of Forensic Sciences of analyses conducted with respect to bloodstains in the pickup truck, the trajectory of shots that struck the truck, and firearms, cartridge cases and projectiles, the SIU can today confirm that the child’s death on November 26, 2020 in Kawartha Lakes was the result of being shot by police,” reads a media release.

“On that date, the one-year-old boy died in the course of an interaction between the boy’s 33-year-old father and Ontario Provincial Police officers. The father – who was shot by police – succumbed to his injuries in hospital.”
