A candlelight vigil has been planned for the seven teenagers involved in a collision south of Cannington over the weekend.
The event will be held at dusk (approximately 6:30 p.m.) at the Sunderland Park on Wednesday (Oct. 27) and will serve as an opportunity for local residents to show support for those touched by the tragedy.
“Let’s show our neighbours how much we love and care,” reads a social media post from event organizer and Ward 5 Councillor Lynn Campbell.
The post notes that the outdoor event has been approved for 100 people. Those planning to attend are asked to bring their own candles of flashlights and to observe social distancing protocols.
Officers were called to Side Road 18, south of Cannington, around 12:45 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 24) following the single-vehicle collison.
“A grey 2006 Chevrolet Sierra pickup truck was southbound on Sideline Road 18 when it lost control, left the roadway and rolled into a ditch,” reads a media release.
Four of the seven occupants were ejected from the vehicle. A 15-year-old boy from Sunderland was pronounced dead at the scene, while six others — all aged 15 to 17 — were airlifted with serious injuries.
Two were listed in critical condition, while the other four were listed in serious but stable condition, police noted Sunday.
The DRPS provided no update on their conditions when contacted the following day.
