Appeal hearing set for convicted sex offender living in Sunderland

A hearing date has been set for a convicted sex offender living in Sunderland, 21 months after he was released from custody.

Thomas Grieve – a former teacher in Whitby – was convicted in September 2019 of 16 counts of sexual assault and sexual interference following accusations from former students. He was sentenced to 720 days in jail on Jan. 7, 2020.

He was released a day later (Jan. 8) pending an appeal of that conviction.

According to neighbours, Grieve moved into a home in Sunderland in late April or early May of that year.

The hearing will be held via videoconference Friday (Oct. 8) morning.

Sunderland Public School will take ‘additional steps’ to protect students from sex offender living in the area
