Man rescued after being trapped in sinkhole at Sunderland gravel pit

Firefighters, paramedics and police teamed up to rescue a man trapped in a sinkhole at a Sunderland area gravel pit Saturday (July 31) evening.

According to Brock Township Fire Chief Rick Harrison, two men were hiking on the CBM Sunderland property on Regional Road 13 when one became trapped up to his waist around 7 p.m.

More than two dozen firefighters (including members of the Oshawa Fire Department’s technical rescue team), three police officers and two paramedics took part in the rescue, Chief Harrison noted.

The man was pulled to safety around 2:30 a.m.

“Outstanding team performance by all emergency services involved,” he said.
