
Four people are facing charges in relation to a recent string of catalytic converter thefts in the Orillia area.
According to the OPP, officers received a report of a suspicious vehicle in a Westmount Drive parking lot around 11 a.m. on Wednesday (June 9).
“Officers attended quickly and located a vehicle matching the description given. Four individuals were observed in the vehicle and an investigation was commenced,” reads a media release.
“As a result, the four occupants were arrested and a subsequent search of the vehicle led to the seizure of a quantity of cocaine, Canadian currency and 10 stolen catalytic converters.”
The four suspects — 50-year-old Matthew Baetsen of Orillia, 27-year-old Shashaunie McQuaid of Orillia, 23-year-old Catherine Watters of Midland and 33-year-old John Strachan of Orillia — have each been charged with 10 counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000,, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of break in instruments and possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine.
Strachan was held in custody pending a bail hearing while the other three were released.
