Firefighters and police rescued seven people from the ice on Lake Simcoe, near Thorah Island, on Friday (March 12) evening.
While few details have been released, Brock Township Deputy Fire Chief Wayne Ward said that all seven were assessed for mild to moderate hypothermia at the scene by responding paramedics.
“Ice conditions were extreme with substantial winds,” he added.
Emergency personnel — which included police and paramedics from Durham and York regions, as well as firefighters from Brock, Ramara and Georgina — utilized both sides of the Beaverton Harbour as a staging area for the rescue effort.
