Township council is asking Durham Region to take additional measures to quell traffic safety concerns in Beaverton.
At its meeting Monday (Feb. 22) night, members of council passed a motion calling for a crosswalk at the intersection of Simcoe and Osborne streets and another requesting the establishment of a Community Safety Zone on both Osborne and Mara Road.
In an interview following the meeting, Ward 2 Councillor Claire Doble said that a crosswalk would improve walkability in the downtown core.
“The intersection at Simcoe Street and Osborne Street in Beaverton is very difficult for pedestrians to cross safely,” she said.
Ward 1 Councillor Mike Jubb said that he’s seen many close calls involving pedestrians in the downtown core,
“I believe a crosswalk for downtown Beaverton is absolutely essential for safety purposes,” he said.
