More than a decade after it was first requested by residents and township council, the Region has added an all-way stop to River Street in Sunderland.
The stop signs are being added at the Church Street intersection, which had previously only had stop signs for north/south traffic.
“The new four-way stop will require drivers in all directions to stop their vehicle completely before entering the intersection, yielding to pedestrians in the crosswalk and any traffic in or approaching the intersection,” reads a notice from the Region.
“This will improve pedestrian safety by providing a controlled intersection for pedestrians to safely cross.”
The initiative is in support of Durham Vision Zero, a long-term plan to ensure the safest possible transportation system that sees no lives lost or serious injuries on roadways in the region.
