Darwin, the IKEA monkey, eight years later

Darwin was just a few months old when he was found on this day eight years ago, wandering around an IKEA parking lot and became a worldwide sensation.

He was far too young to have been taken away from his birth mother and placed in the exotic animal trade. Monkeys normally stay with their mothers for the first few years of their lives in order to learn life skills.

Fortunately, Darwin has adjusted to sanctuary life by being surrounded by other macaques who have taught him appropriate monkey behaviours such as grooming and learning that he isn’t necessarily first in line to get treats and meals.

Here is Darwin through the years – 2013, 2017, 2019.

He has grown up to be a handsome young monkey.
