A Beaverton area business owner has been recognized by Durham Region as an accessibility champion.
Russell Fisher of Fisher’s Your Independent Grocer is one of the recipients of an accessibility award this year for his efforts in identifying, removing and preventing barriers for individuals living with a disability.
“Due to the challenges presented by the pandemic, Russell quickly responded to his community by removing barriers to provide greater store access for seniors and individuals with compromised immune systems,” reads a media release.
“He offered earlier store hours, online shopping, and improved access to aisles for an easier and safer shopping experience for vulnerable populations.”
Fisher said the award was a total team effort, crediting his staff for their efforts.
“This recognition means so much to my team and I. The award symbolizes the huge efforts that we undertake day in and day out to ensure every one of our customers feel safe, special and can get what they need from our store to live their lives well,” he said.
“My team is proud to serve this community and support each other as we battle through trying times and look forward to the better days ahead.”
