UPDATE: The SIU has confirmed that a one-year-old boy died as a result of a gunshot wound.
The OPP has released information about the incident on Pigeon Lake Road that resulted in the death of a child.
According to a media release, officers from the Peterborough County detachment of the OPP responded to a call for service in Trent Lakes related to a domestic dispute involving a firearm around 8:48 a.m.
Officers from the Kawartha Lakes detachment later attempted to stop the vehicle, the release notes.
“There was a motor vehicle collision between the vehicle and an OPP cruiser at a location on Pigeon Lake Road in the City of Kawartha Lakes,” it reads.
“An altercation occurred between the male driver and officers. The male was apprehended, with the assistance of members of the Kawartha Lakes Police Service. This male was transported to a Toronto area trauma centre with serious injuries.”
A OPP officer from Kawartha Lakes also sustained serious injury and is being treated in Toronto.
“A child died at the scene as a result of the incident,” the release reads.
The investigation is ongoing.
“The Criminal Investigation Branch of the OPP will manage the scene and on-going criminal investigation with the assistance of the Kawartha Lakes Police Service and York Regional Police Service, at the request of OPP Commissioner (Thomas) Carrique,” the release notes.
“The Province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has invoked their mandate and have begun their investigation.”
As a result of a tragic incident today, one child is dead and two others significantly injured. I ask that @SIUOntario and @YRP be given time to investigate, without speculation on the events as they unfolded. Our thoughts & prayers are with those that are suffering today. https://t.co/wIdB2mXWYr
