OPP lay more than 8,200 traffic charges over Labour Day long weekend

A four-day traffic safety blitz by the OPP over the Labour Day long weekend resulted in more than 8,200 charges being laid.

Speeding led the list of offence categories, with more than 5,800 charges laid followed by failure to weat seatbelt (250), stunt driving/street racing (157), impaired driving (110) and distracted driving (98).

There was also two fatal collisions on roads patrolled by the OPP, as well as a fatal collision involving an off-road vehicle.

“Over and above the charges, officers initiated more than 8,400 traffic stops aimed at educating the public about safe driving practices,” reads a media release.
