Three charged, one wanted in connection to alleged forcible confinement

Police have charged three people and are searching for a fourth after a man was allegedly forcibly confined over the weekend.

According to Durham Regional Police, between 5 p.m. Friday (Aug. 28) and 11 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 29), a 48-year-old victim was held against his will in a Whitby apartment. Police say he was assaulted and extorted for money by four suspects.

The victim advised police that he drove to a basement apartment on Queen Street in Whitby and while inside, he was accosted by the four parties and tied up. The suspects allegedly demanded cash for his release.

The male was beaten and was not allowed to leave, according to police. He was eventually able to free himself on Saturday morning and ran out of the home. He was located by a citizen who called police.

Three parties were arrested and police continue to look for a fourth suspect.

Investigators are advising that this was an isolated incident and not a random act.
