Charges have been laid after a six-year-old child was the victim of an alleged sexual assault at Tudhope Park in Orillia.
According to the OPP, a man reportedly entered the washroom at Moose Beach around 8:40 p.m. on Wednesday (Aug. 12) night.
“The male approached a six-year-old child and sexually assaulted the child. The details of the assault were relayed to the father, by the child,” reads a media release.
“The father and another witness followed the suspect to the suspect’s residence on Crawford Street and called police.”
A former Oshawa resident – 29-year-old Derek Pye – now living in Orillia has been charged with sexual interference, sexual assault and forcible confinement.
He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
“This incident illustrates the need for parents and caregivers to talk to their children about the potential dangers of strangers,” the media release reads.
“Informing your children what the difference between a ‘good touch’ and ‘bad touch’ could make a big difference in their lives. The young person in this incident told a safe adult what happened, in a timely fashion, which likely prevented further incidents from happening.”
