Orillia man arrested following lengthy standoff with police

An Orillia man is facing charges after allegedly threatening a couple with a weapon before fleeing to his home and prompting a lengthy standoff with police.

According to the OPP, the man attended a residence in the West Ridge area of Orillia around 10 p.m. Thursday (July 30) and confronted the couple regarding a previous dispute.

“The male threatened the couple with a weapon and then fled the area prior to police arrival. Members of the Orillia OPP detachment searched for the male, whose identity was known, and located him at his residence a short distance away,” reads a media release.

“Officers were able to make contact with the male but he refused to turn himself in. Members of the OPP Emergency Response Team, Canine, Tactics and Rescue Unit and Crisis Negotiators all attended and contained the situation ensuring the safety of the public and all involved.”

The man was arrested around 7:30 a.m. Friday (July 31) without further incident.

Eli Dolynchuk, 40, has been charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of uttering threats – cause death or bodily harm, possession of weapon for dangerous purpose and fail to comply with probation order.

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
