Cyclist dead following collision in Whitby

A 53-year-old cyclist died following a collision in Whitby Tuesday (July 7) morning.

According to the DRPS, officers were called to a motor vehicle collision involving a cyclist and a delivery truck on Baldwin Street (Highway 12) and Canary Crescent in Whitby around 11 a.m.

“The 53-year-old male cyclist was travelling northbound on Baldwin Street in the northbound lane, when he was struck by a FedEx ground delivery truck. The FedEx ground delivery truck was westbound on Canary Crescent, attempting to make a left turn to go southbound on Baldwin Street, when it struck the cyclist,” reads a media release.

“The driver of the delivery vehicle stopped and provided assistance to the cyclist and was co-operative with police.”

The cyclist was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

He has been identified as Geoffrey Mitchell of Whitby.

“The investigation is ongoing. Police would like to hear from any witnesses to this collision, who have not already spoken to police,” reads a media release.
