A 22-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following an assault on a York Regional Police officer.
According to police, the officer sent in a radio call for assistance from the parking lot of the Hillcrest Mall in Markham around 3:40 p.m. Friday (March 27).
“When officers arrived they found that a York Regional Police Constable was suffering from serious injuries. He was rushed to hospital, where he remains, for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The injured officer is a four-year veteran with the service,” reads a media release.
Responding officers located the suspect at the scene who was not injured and he was placed under arrest.
“The investigation has revealed that the police officer was parked in the mall parking lot, near the Marshalls store, when he was approached by the suspect. The suspect assaulted the officer who was seated inside of his cruiser,” a media release reads.
“The altercation continued outside of the car where the suspect took possession of the officer’s baton and continued the assault.”
Chidubem Anthony Okeke of no fixed address has been charged with attempted murder and fail to comply with recognizance.
He is scheduled to appear in court Saturday (March 28).
“Investigators are seeking any video surveillance from the area that may have captured the incident or anyone that may have captured dashcam video of the suspect prior to the incident,” the media release reads.
