Township to examine conversion of Cannington arena to outdoor ice surface

Before committing to the replacement of the roof at the Rick MacLeish Memorial Community Centre in Cannington, Brock Township is going to take a look at converting the rink to an outdoor facility.

At Monday’s (March 2) meeting of the committee of the whole, Regional Councillor Ted Smith brought forward a motion calling for Township staff to prepare a “feasibility report” on that possibility.

Coun. Smith’s motion, which was approved, calls for staff to report on the potential removal of the outer structure of the arena, leaving an intact ice surface for outdoor use.

While replacement of the roof has been penciled into the budget at $200,000, he noted that the cost of the project could be far greater.

“It’s going to take significant money to fix that roof,” Coun. Smith said.

“I’m interested in knowing if any of this is feasible.”

Ward 5 Councillor Lynn Campbell was the only member of council to vote against the motion.

“This is an important community facility…taking away the roof of the Cannington arena is not the right thing to do,” she said.

While he supported the motion, Ward 3 Councillor Walter Schummer questioned its reasoning by noting that the municipality has been setting aside money for the project in reserves.

The first step in the process should be determining how much it would cost to complete a feasibility study.

“This is not a small report. It’s a significant report with significant issues,” Coun. Schummer said.

“I don’t think we can do this half-assed.”
