Striking members of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario hit the picket lines in Brock Township Tuesday (Feb. 4).
Teachers from local schools gathered at the intersection of Highway 12 and River Street for much of the day. Public elementary schools in Durham are also scheduled to be closed Thursday (Feb. 6) this week.
“We understand the additional challenge this can pose for families, but for the reasons previously mentioned, we are not able to safely supervise students without our staff,” reads a notice from Norah Marsh, acting director of education for the Durham District School Board.
Strikes are also planned for next Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 10 and 11).
“Unless notified otherwise, all DDSB elementary schools and programs that will close on these days will re-open for regularly scheduled classes on Friday, February 7, 2020 and next week on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 will continue with scheduled classes thereafter, pending further notice. DDSB’s Job Action Committee will continue to provide updated communication to families related to this escalation in job action,” the notice reads.
“We value our staff and their work with students. We also recognize their right to the collective bargaining process, which includes the option of full withdrawal of services and of volunteer activities.”
