Police in Kawartha Lakes have received numerous reports about a telephone scam that’s making the rounds once again.
According to the OPP, persons are being contacted by callers identifying themselves as either a representative from the Canada Revenue Agency or a member of the ‘fraud squad.’
“Neither of these entities would ever request personal information, such as a SIN, over the phone, if at all,” reads a media release.
“In one situation, the call display number was that of the OPP (705-324-6741), making this a very convincing situation. Recognizing that this is occurring, persons receiving a call from an officer can request a face to face meeting or advise the caller that they will call the detachment to continue the conversation. Do not provide your Social Insurance Number or other personal information over the phone.”
Residents are reminded that the Canada Revenue Agency will never request that outstanding fees be paid through gift cards.
If in doubt, residents can contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 for assistance.
