The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the circumstances of a fatal crash in Markham Tuesday (Dec. 31) night.
According to a media release, preliminary information suggests that a York Regional Police officer began following a Hyundai Veloster in the area of Major Mackenzie Drive East and Kennedy Road around 7:15 p.m.
“In the area of Ninth Line and Elgin Mills Road East, the Veloster became involved in a collision with a Toyota Corolla,” the media release reads.
“The 68-year-old male driver of the Corolla was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Veloster sustained no serious injuries.”
A social media post from police indicates that the driver of the Veloster was charged with impaired driving following the collision but the SIU has not confirmed that information.
