Public high schools in Durham to close for one-day strike

Public high schools in Durham – including Brock High – will be closed Wednesday (Dec. 4) for a one-day strike by members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation.

The board made the announcement shortly after midnight, acknowledging that no agreement had been reached between the union and the Province.

All schools will re-open on Thursday (Dec. 5), with a notice from the board emphasizing that all elementary schools will not be impacted.

“We share your concern with this development,” reads a post from Lisa Millar, the DDSB’s director of education.

“It is highly unusual for the DDSB to close schools to our students. This has been, and continues to be, an exceptional and rapidly changing situation, but student and staff safety is always our first priority. The decision to close schools has not been taken lightly, and has been made because we do not believe we can provide the necessary safe and secure learning environments for all students during a full withdrawal of services by OSSTF members.”

Updates will be posted to the DDSB website, as well as social media channels.

“We appreciate your understanding as we all work together throughout this ongoing process. Once again, we assure you that all decisions that we have undertaken have been made with your child’s safety as our number one priority,” Millar’s notice reads.
