A 31-year-old man has been arrested and charged following an alleged hate crime at a public facility in Peterborough.
According to police, the victim was working at a public facility on the morning of Nov. 24 when the accused became agitated, uttered racial slurs at the victim and spat on them.
“The incident was reported to police and officers investigated. Police contacted the accused and later that same day the accused turned himself in at the police station,” reads a media release.
As a result of the investigation, Travis Justin Cassidy of no fixed address was arrested and charged with assault and fail to comply with a probation order.
“Due to the comments made at the time of the offence this incident has been classified as a hate bias crime. A hate crime is a criminal offence committed against a person or property which is motivated by the suspect/offender’s hate bias against a racial, religious, ethnic, sexual orientation or disability group,” the media release reads.
