Still time to take part in Fill a Purse for a Sister

There’s still time for township residents to take part in the Fill a Purse for a Sister campaign.

The initiative, now in its fifth year, collects donations of purses, backpacks and handbags filled with essential items.

“This campaign is dedicated to providing comfort to women through the collecting and sharing of new and gently used purses filled with personal necessities,” reads a post on its Facebook page.

“Purses collected for the Fill A Purse For A Sister Campaign are distributed to local shelters, social agencies and crisis centres.”

The area campaign was launched by Angel Freedman, a Markham-based social worker and founder of Angel’s Garage — a charity that distributes used clothing to people in need. In 2017 alone, more than 6,000 purses were donated to nine shelters throughout the GTA.

Organizers are hoping to collect 12,000 purses during this year’s campaign, which runs until Dec. 1.

“Purses should be gently used and previously loved, or new. Please do not donate purses that are worn out, soiled, or ripped,” reads the donation guidelines.

Contents can include items such as an encouraging note, feminine hygiene products, tissues, shampoo, conditioner, a toothbrush, toothpaste, a hair brush, gloves, a hat, a scarf, lip balm, makeup, a coffee shop gift card, a notepad, a pen, a book/magazine, a whistle, flashlight, gum etc.”

In Brock Township, donations can be dropped off at REMAX Country Lakes Realty in Beaverton, the Nourish and Develop Foundation in Cannington as well as Doggity Do and Country Loonies in Sunderland.
