Death of man in DRPS custody under investigation by SIU

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 32-year-old man while in the custody of the DRPS.

According to a media release, officers were called to the area of Simcoe Street and Highway 401 in relation to an altercation between individuals around noon Tuesday (Nov. 5).

“A man was arrested. He was transported to hospital, and then later released and lodged in a police station cell,” the media release reads.

“At approximately 11 p.m., the man was found in medical distress. First aid was commenced, and Emergency Medical Services attended. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to this incident. A post-mortem will take place tomorrow morning in Toronto.

“The SIU is urging anyone who may have information regarding this incident to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website,” the media release reads.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
