Two teenagers have been arrested following a human trafficking investigation in Durham Region.
According to police, a female victim came forward to police in May and advised that she was being recruited into the sex trade by the two suspects – a 17-year-old male and a 17-year-old female.
“The 17-year-old male suspect sexually assaulted the victim in May 2019,” reads a media release.
Investigators identified the 17-year-old male and he was arrested on July 17, police say, with the 17-year-old female arrested on Tuesday (Oct. 15).
The 17-year-old male from Pickering was charged with sexual assault, procuring person under 18; sexual exploitation and unlawfully possess child pornography. He was held for a bail hearing.
The 17-year-old female from Ajax was charged with procuring person under 18. She was released on a promise to appear.
