A scam making the rounds in Kawartha Lakes involves suspicious telephone calls from a person posing as a police officer.
According to the Kawartha Lakes Police Service, complaints have been received by several residents in the past week.
“The caller has identified himself as police constable and claims to be investigating a criminal matter. The caller then demands that money be forwarded to him or he will arrest and charge the victim,” reads a media release from police.
Police are reminding residents to be vigilant.
“Scammers can be sneaky and very convincing. They will target anyone in our community, from students and young people to retirees,” the media release reads.
“The City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service would like to remind the community to be on their guard when receiving telephone calls from anyone who requests personal or financial information, who requests payments through gift-cards or e-transfers, or who threatens you with punitive action such as a being arrested if you do not comply with their demands.”
