Georgina man charged in connection with attempted bank robberies in Newmarket

Police in York Region are thanking the public following the arrest of a suspect in two unsuccessful bank robbery attempts in Newmarket.

According to police a lone suspect entered a bank at Davis Drive and Leslie Street and gave the bank employee a note stating he had a weapon and wanted money.

“The suspect fled from the bank without obtaining any money,” reads a media release from police.

“Only a few minutes later, the same suspect entered another nearby bank and committed a robbery in the same way as the first. Again, the suspect fled without obtaining any money.”

Patrick O’Connor, 57, was arrested and charged with two counts of robbery on Tuesday (Sept. 10) after police released photos of the suspect earlier in the day.

He is scheduled to appear in Newmarket court on Wednesday for a bail hearing.

Police say the suspect then attended a store in the same area and changed his clothing in the washroom.
