A former elementary teacher in Oshawa that has been charged in relation to an alleged historical sexual assault of a student also served as a substitute at schools throughout the region.
According to police, the suspect served as a teacher at Dr. C.F. Cannon Public School at the time of the allegations, which were made by a former Grade 5 student and date back to 1996 and 1997.
The incident reportedly took place at the school, police said.
The Durham District School Board confirmed those details in a media release and noted that the teacher served as a substitute for more than a decade following his retirement.
“Upon retirement in 1999, the accused was also a supply teacher until 2012 at various schools throughout the board,” the media release reads.
Douglas Brooks, 74, of Peachtree Crescent in Bowmanville was arrested Friday (July 12) has been charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching. He was released on a promise to appear.
“Investigators want to ensure there are no other victims,” a media release from police reads.
