Volunteers need to step up to save the 1st Cannington Scout Group.
The Cannington chapter was recently closed by Scouts Canada due to a lack of volunteer leadership but efforts are underway to re-establish the group.
A public meeting has been organized for Wednesday (June 26) at 7 p.m. at the Lions’ hall on Laidlaw Street South for potential volunteers to learn more about the program.
“If there are community members able to commit two to three hours a week or parents interested in registering their children for next year, now is the time to consider volunteering,” said Lisa Schummer, a Cannington resident and former leader that organized the meeting.
When the group was closed, Scouts Canada began assumption of its property, including the Scouts Hall on McKay Street.
“They have agreed to temporarily halt the seizure of the group bank account and the removal of all group gear until the first week of July,” Schummer said.
“If the group is closed and assets taken over by the council, it is likely the Scout Hall will be sold off – possibly even demolished – despite fact that it was designated a historically significant building.”
