The young members of the Cannington Figure Skating Club may not be able to hit the ice this fall without the support of volunteers.
The organization has issued an urgent call for volunteers and may have to fold prior to the 2019/20 season should it go unanswered.
“We are seeking motivated people to continue to build on what has held out as a strong skating club for the past 40-plus years,” said Kim Sanderson, a longtime volunteer.
“The current executive members have been with our club for way longer than what would be considered a reasonable term. Some for longer than 10 years.”
Some of them helped steer the club back from financial collapse after a former treasurer was convicted in 2008 of stealing more than $10,000 from its coffers.
“The club is fortunate to have worked through the distressing times of an embezzlement and for several years we have had very healthy registration numbers,” Sanderson said.
Potential volunteers have been invited to attend a meeting next Wednesday (June 19) at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Rick MacLeish Community Centre.
“It’s really just about people continuing to volunteer their personal time. Our four executive members have devoted years of their personal free time. Now, it’s time for others,” Sanderson said.
