Death of elderly woman in Oshawa deemed a homicide

The death of an 83-year-old woman in Oshawa has been deemed a homicide.

According to police, officers responded to an apartment fire on Nonquon Road shortly after 7 p.m. on Sunday (May 12).

“Oshawa Fire Services quickly extinguished the fire and found an elderly female inside with injuries,” read a media release.

“The 83-year-old female was taken to a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. Homicide investigators were called to the scene and they took carriage of the investigation.”

A 56-year-old man was arrested a short time later in connection to her death. His name has not been released.

“This is an ongoing investigation and there will be more information to follow. This is the fifth homicide (of the year) in Durham Region,” the media release reads.
