A suspected impaired driver allegedly assaulted officers and attempted to drive off in his vehicle during a traffic stop in Pickering.

Police say that officers responded to the intersection of Kingston Road and Glenanna Road for an driver reportedly asleep in his vehicle.

“Officers arrived and found the suspect in a blue Honda Accord parked in the live eastbound lanes. Officers attempted to speak to him but the male was not co-operative with the officers,” reads a media release from DRPS.

“The male attempted to drive away and officers struggled with the male to shut the car off. The male proceeded to punch at the officers as he continued to place the vehicle into drive. The officers deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon and the male was eventually taken into custody. The officers suffered minor injuries.”

Marc Chapman, 35, of Reed Drive in Ajax has been charged with operation while impaired – alcohol; dangerous operation of a conveyance, operation while impaired – exceed as well as two counts of assault a peace officer.

He was released from custody.
