Ramara Chamber of Commerce brass thinks outside of the box

By Sam Laskaris

There’s no denying the Ramara Chamber of Commerce is a thriving local organization.

“We have 120 members,” boasts Roger Selman, who has served as the president of the non-profit association for the past decade.

“That’s pretty good for our size. Beaverton doesn’t even have one any more. We have a lot of interest in ours. Members see the benefits we can offer them.”

The Ramara Chamber of Commerce was established in 1996. Annual memberships cost $95.

“We’re all there to support each other,” Selman said.

“And we have member-to-member discounts.”

The association’s mission is to support and promote business in Ramara through the enhancement of economic and community prosperity.

Besides aiming to promote businesses throughout Ramara, the association also organizes and operates a number of local events each year.

“We’re always trying to do things outside of the box,” Selman said.

For example, the association will stage its ninth annual Ramara Classic Car Show this summer. This event, at the Brechin Dry Dock Marine, allows car enthusiasts to come to town from all corners of the province.

“We keep growing and growing,” Selman said.

“We started with about 100 cars. And now we have about 150 to 170 cars.”

The Ramara Chamber of Commerce also stages an annual golf tournament.

And during its annual general meeting, the association honours recipients in various award categories. This year’s AGM is scheduled for May 9 at the Brechin/Mara Legion.

Other events the Ramara Chamber of Commerce runs are business breakfast networking opportunities and well as Christmas networking parties.

It also updates and operates Ramara’s tourism kiosk, located in the Wild Wing parking lot on Highway 12.

And besides putting out an annual membership directory booklet, every three years it also publishes a Ramara guide map, which includes historical sites and places of interest.

“We can’t believe the demand for maps,” Selman said.

The Ramara organization is also part of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce.

Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at the Ramara Township’s municipal office.
