Brock Township has hired an interim CAO.
Garth Johns, who has previously worked in human resources management for the Region of Durham and Lakeridge Health, will step into the role on April 8.
Current CAO/Clerk Thom Gettinby provided notice of his impending retirement back in January. The position will be split after his final day with the municipality on April 5 with Deputy Clerk Becky Jamieson – who is currently on parental leave – being promoted to clerk.
Johns was hired following interviews with three candidates conducted by Mayor Debbie Bath-Hadden, Regional Councillor Ted Smith and Ward 2 Councillor Claire Doble.
“We had some very qualified candidates to choose from. It was difficult to make a decision,” Mayor Bath-Hadden said.
“There was no bad decision,” added Coun. Doble.
“Any of them (the candidates) would have done a very good job.”
Johns spent four years as the corporate director of Lakeridge Health, before moving on to the Region for nearly a decade. He currently serves as the executive director of the Oshawa BIA, in addition to running a consulting company, and is the author of five books.
With Gettinby moving into retirement and Jamieson on a temporary leave, members of council have also opted to hire Dr. Garry Cubitt on an as-needed basis as a consultant.
Cubitt served as the CAO of Durham Region for more than 25 years, retiring from that position in the spring of 2018.
One of his primary responsibilities will be leading the development of a new strategic plan for the municipality, as well as leading the recruitment efforts to fill the CAO position on a full-time basis.
