Youth fastball is being revived locally this spring thanks to the co-operation from officials from a pair of area recreation facilities.
Due to dwindling interest a Ramara league folded after the conclusion of the 2017 season.
But now representatives from the Ramara and Rama First Nation recreation centres have teamed up to revive a youth league.
The result is the Rama-Ra Royals Fastball League, which is hoping to kick off in mid-May at area ball diamonds.
Caroline Schiavone, the recreation services supervisor at the Ramara Recreation Centre, said discussions for the new circuit arose in 2018.
“I met with Rama recreation staff at a conference last year and we started talking about youth sports,” she said. “They were lamenting it was such a loss their kids didn’t have a fastball league anymore.”
Representatives from both recreation centres decided to join forces and see if they could start up a circuit once again. The league name Rama-Ra signifies the partnership of the two centres.
After opening up online registrations this past month Schiavone said a number of individuals signed up their children within 24 hours.
Organizers are hoping to have enough players to field teams in four age groupings. They are T-Ball (ages 4-6), Novice (7-10), Junior (11-14) and Senior (15-17).
The T-Ball season is scheduled to last six weeks while the other divisions would run 12 weeks, one game per week, plus a playoff schedule after, concluding in mid-August.
Schiavone is hoping to have at least four teams in each age group. She believes the Senior one might be the most difficult to fill and potentially might not run this season since she feels older teenagers have more commitments with their school, jobs and social lives.
League officials are hoping to stage games at five different ball diamonds. They are Brechin Ball Park, Ramara Centre, Rama Veterans Field and parks in Atherley and Dalrymple.
The registration fee for those looking to sign up for T-Ball is $40 per player. The fee for the other divisions is $70 for each player who registers before Apr. 1. A late fee of an additional $20 will be assessed for those who sign up after Apr. 1.
Online registration is open now.
