YRPS arrest 20 more motorists for impaired driving

Twenty more motorists have been charged with impaired driving by the YRPS.

The charges were laid between Jan. 21 and Jan. 28. In total, more than 100 impaired driving charges have been laid against upwards of 70 people in the first four weeks of 2019.

“We are reminding drivers that York Regional Police conducts RIDE spot checks year-round and that our officers are always watching for suspected impaired drivers. We also continue to encourage citizens to call 911 if you spot a suspected impaired driver,” reads a media release from police.

The YRPS shared video footage of one of the arrests, which came after officers were called to a single-vehicle accident in Markham around 3 a.m. Sunday (Jan. 27).

“When officers arrived they located the vehicle with a lone male asleep in the driver’s seat. The vehicle was running and a tire was spinning as the vehicle was in gear and the drivers’ foot was still on the accelerator,” a media release reads.

“Officers were unable to wake the driver and with the assistance of Markham Fire and Emergency Services, a window on the vehicle was broken. There was a strong smell of alcohol coming from the driver who was placed under arrest and transported to hospital. He was later charged with impaired driving and the investigation is ongoing.”
