Three Sunderland ringette teams earn silver medals at Whitby tournament

Three Sunderland Stingerz teams returned home from a weekend tournament in Whitby with silver medals.

The U9, U10 and U14 teams all advanced to the finals of the tournament, which featured regional rivals as well as a handful of clubs from out of the area.

The U9 squad posted a 1-1-1 record in the round-robin portion, with a 4-4 draw against Whitby, a 9-3 win over Barrie and a 3-2 loss against Pickering. The Stingerz advanced to the finals based on goal differential and claimed the silver medal after another loss to Pickering, this time by a 4-2 score.

Members of the U9 team include Peyton Barnett, Kaydence O’Grady, Delaney O’Grady, Katessa Mitchell, Grace Blackstock, Ella Blackstock, Dakota Norris, Kelby Parliament, Isla Franco, MacKenzie Vestby-Hayward, Harlow Martin, Charlee Gregson and Mackailyn Heggie. The coaching staff is comprised of Krystin O’Grady, Micki Middleton, Leah Mitchell and Sarah Blackstock.

The U10 Stingerz claimed the top spot in the division with three straight wins – 11-10 over Whitby, 10-4 over Forest P and 7-6 over Forest B – before dispatching Forest B by a 10-7 score in the semifinals. Sunderland took on Whitby finals, losing 6-4.

Members of the U10 team include Jayla Keeler, Kyla Keeler, Danica Scribner, Chelsea Reid, Vienna LaPointe, Ava Heffern, Piper Smallwood, Isabella Brooks, Brezlyn Kinniburgh, Payton Norton, Amelia Warriner, Elowyn Dawson and Jolene Allair.

The U14 squad opened with a pair of wins, 3-0 over Clarence Rockland and 6-4 over Forest, before a 6-4 loss to Sudbury to close out the preliminary round as the top seed. In the finals, a rematch against Forest ended with a 5-4 loss.

Members of the U14 team includes Alysa Pratt, Ava Lamasurier, Olivia Kennedy, Jaidyn Picco, Allison Appleby, Arianna Avery, Cadence Cassidy, Avery Fawns, Alex MacLeod, Sylvia McCullough, Kaitlyn Nicol, and Emma Turner. The coaching staff is comprised of Sheryl Pratt, Jen Avery and Terri Lemasurier.
