Brock is supporting the City of Oshawa’s efforts to keep the GM plant open beyond the end of 2019.
At Monday (Jan. 7) night’s meeting, township council supported a motion from the City of Oshawa encouraging company officials to revisit its decision, which was announced in late November.
Roughly 2,600 hourly employees will be impacted, though GM has pledged financial support to help them find new jobs.
The motion from Oshawa states that the City, GM and its employees have enjoyed “an historic 100 year successful partnership in this community” and notes the closure will have a “negative impact” on the local, regional, provincial and national economies.
It also notes that “numerous employees of General Motors and associated industries, services and businesses in Oshawa and Durham Region that depend on the operation of the Oshawa assembly plant.”
“The spinoff in Durham is astronomical,” said Mayor Debbie Bath-Hadden.
