Motorist charged after allegedly driving into scene of serious accident on Highway 12

A Severn Township man is facing a litany of charges after he allegedly drove into the scene of a serious accident on Highway 12 in Ramara Township on New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31).

The collision, which occurred around 5 p.m., sent seven people to hospital and resulted in 10 charges against a Barrie man.

Police say that while emergency crews were tending to the persons involved in the collision, a vehicle ignored the closed road signs and drove into the collision scene at high speed.

Justin DeVries, 21, of Severn Township was arrested and charged with dangerous driving, drive on closed highway, drive no insurance, operate unsafe vehicle, drive no licence as well as four other charges under the Highway Traffic Act.

“Police remind motorists to be cautious, reduce speed and follow the direction of emergency personnel who may be directing traffic at collision scenes.  Roads are generally closed during these incidents to provide a safe workspace for vulnerable emergency workers,” reads a media release from the OPP.
