Durham police officer charged with sexual assault

A Durham Regional Police officer has been charged with sexual assault following allegations regarding his conduct while off duty.

Members of the DRPS Professional Standards Unit launched an investigation earlier this month when an allegation by an adult woman was brought forward regarding the conduct of the officer.

As a result of the investigation, Jack Stelwagen, 40, has been charged with Sexual Assault. He was released on a Promise to Appear.

The accused has been suspended with pay, as per the rules in Ontario.

Prior to his suspension, Stelwagen had been assigned to West Division. He has been an officer with DRPS since 2007.
