North York woman drowns in Ramara

A North York woman drowned Sunday (May 20) after her canoe capsized in Ramara Township.

According to the OPP, officers from the Orillia detachment responded to a report of an overturned canoe on Lake Couchiching around noon.

Preliminary investigation reveals that two females were in a canoe that overturned approximately 100 meters from the shore.

Police say that both females were not wearing personal flotation devices.

As a result of this incident, a 25-year-old North York woman was brought to an Orillia hospital by paramedics where she was pronounced deceased.

The second person was cleared medically at the scene but attended the hospital on her own, police said.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending next of kin notifications and a post mortem.

Orillia OPP Marine Unit, Rama Police Service, Rama Emergency Medical Services, County of Sinp, Orillia Fire Department, Rama Fire, Ramara Fire and Rescue all assisted with the rescue and recovery.The Orillia OPP would like to remind the public to wear their Personal Floatation Devices at all times when on the water. PFDs will only work if they are worn,” reads a media release.
