Prepare to eat pancakes and pizza this weekend as the annual Maple Syrup Festival returns to the streets of Sunderland.
Spanning Saturday (April 7) and Sunday (April 8), the ever popular festival has something for everyone.
The Maple Syrup Festival starts with the pancake breakfast, serving up flapjacks as early as 8 a.m. (and continuing until 2 p.m.).
At 9:45 a.m., after enjoying the first round of pancakes and taking in a Northern Stoker Biomass Heating demo at Northern Metalworks, (which also runs until 2 p.m.), the public is invited to opening ceremonies in the upper level of the Sunderland Town Hall.
The Sunderland Lions Community Theatre Group will then take the stage before performances by the Georgina Drum Circle and the Legion Line Dancers.
For those looking to switch from sweet to savoury, the Pizza Eating Contest starts at 11:30 a.m., followed by an 12:15 p.m. performance by Outback Cloggers.
Take to the streets at 12:30 p.m. for the Bathtub Races at River and Albert streets.
Afternoon activities include even more entertainment by Vintage Debris Band and Outback Cloggers.
All-day activities, in addition to the pancake breakfast, include bus tours to Harlaine Maple Products (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.), horse and wagon rides with boarding at the park or school, art and craft vendors at the school, an outdoor vendors market, a farm tractor display at the arena, a fine art show downstairs at the Town Hall, pony rides at the park, an outdoor petting zoo (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), and Brock Sports Hall of Fame and Recreation Programs in the lobby of the arena.
Attendees are also invited to visit the Grace Baptist Church open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Escape Room Mystery at St. Andrews United Church from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the Sunderland Historical Museum.
Day two of the festival includes many of the same all-day activities as well as the Legion Line Dancers performing at 10:30 a.m. at the Town Hall, a Lawn Tractor Pull demonstration, a pancake eating contest and performances by the Wolfgang Brothers and Legion Line Dancers.
Zoo to You Animals will also be upstairs at the arena from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m..
In case of inclement weather, the Sunderland Arena will host all outdoor vendors.
