After a sold-out show last year, Leah Daniels and Beverley Mahood are heading back to Sunderland this holiday season. The duo are headlining the ‘Home for the Holidays’ show at the Sunderland Town Hall on Sunday (Dec. 23), with performances slated for 2 and 7 p.m.

Township council will have no shortage of input when they consider the possibility of recreational cannabis retailers opening up shop in Brock. The municipality launched a survey to gauge public opinion earlier this month and more than 700 responses have been received thus far, according to Deputy Clerk Becky Jamieson. However, as it is possible to complete the survey more than once, it’s unclear how many different people have taken part.

The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LRSCA) is working with a Beaverton area farm to address issues involving run-off in Lake Simcoe. The matter was discussed at Monday’s (Dec. 17) meeting of the planning and economic development committee as members of council received correspondence from former mayor John Grant advising that an agreement had been reached.
Members of council are looking to take steps to ensure that medicinal cannabis operations are following federal regulations as they set up shop in rural areas of the township. Addressing concerns raised in relation to an operation on Concession 11, local politicians have requested a meeting with the Ministry of Health early in 2019.
While there are some challenges to be addressed, It appears as though Beaverton made a solid first impression on visitors. The village was recently paired with Selwyn Township, near Peterborough, in the First Impressions Community Exchange, a provincial program that is designed to highlight the first impression a community conveys to visitors — including tourists, potential business investors and new residents.
A Beaverton student has launched a fundraising campaign to honour Canadians killed during the First World War. Colby Farrell – who is currently in France, studying abroad as part of a Rotary exchange program – is raising money in an effort to place a candle at the graves at the Iwuy Communal Cemetery.
Brock Township will be seeing a slight dip in federal gas tax funding in 2019.
At last week’s meeting of the public works and facilities committee, Treasurer Laura Barta said the municipality is slated to receive roughly $353,000 next year – a decrease of roughly $8,000.
An Olympian and an author will be joining Grade 8 students from across the township at Brock High School next week to learn about maintaining positive mental health. Jessica Phoenix and Julie Fitz-Gerald will discuss resilience and perseverance in the face of injury, stress, anxiety and depression during the workshop next Wednesday (Dec. 18) morning.
