Skating day in Beaverton a celebration of Canada

skating 3Dozens of people turned out to the Canada 150 skating day event hosted by the Beaverton Lions Club.

In addition to the action on the ice, those taking part were treated to hot dogs, hot chocolate and an assortment of holiday goodies, as well as a number of giveaways and a visit from Santa Claus himself.

The local event was part of a nation-wide initiative funded by the federal government.

“Skating is an iconic winter activity that is part of our country’s sporting heritage,” said Canadian Heritage Minister Melanie Joly.

“On Dec. 10, let’s glide into winter by skating together. Embrace the cold with your family and friends and participate in Canada 150 Skating Day.”
