Families in Beaverton and surrounding area are invited to hit the ice for free next weekend in a celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary.
The village’s Lion’s Club, along with sponsors Kim and Gerry Lodwick from Re/Max Country Lakes Realty, are hosting a special Canada 150 Skate Day next Sunday (Dec. 10) from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Beaverton Thorah Community Centre.
In addition to offering families an opportunity for free skating, Canada 150 toques will be handed out to the first 100 children in attendance.
“We want families to dress in red and white to show off their Canadian pride,” said Lions member Cyndi Schaffer.
Those taking part will be treated to hot dogs, hot chocolate and an assortment of holiday goodies, as well as a number of giveaways and a visit from Santa Claus himself.
The local event is part of a nation-wide initiative funded by the federal government.
“Skating is an iconic winter activity that is part of our country’s sporting heritage,” said Canadian Heritage Minister Melanie Joly.
“On Dec. 10, let’s glide into winter by skating together. Embrace the cold with your family and friends and participate in Canada 150 Skating Day.”
