The Region of Durham is looking into the possibility of charging a surtax on recreational marijuana once it’s legalized next summer.
Recommendations endorsed by regional council calls for staff to “report back on the ability to create a surtax, of an equivalent amount to senior governments, on the products being sold in licensed facilities.”
The Region claims the revenue would be used to offset the “education and safety costs” related to the legalized use of cannabis.
As well, the Region is asking municipalities to work together on the development of a unified bylaw related to recreational use.
