Police are hoping to track down the driver of a black pickup truck that was involved in a bizarre accident in Cannington on Monday (Aug. 21) night.

The accident occurred around 10 p.m. at the intersection of Shedden Street and Laidlaw Street when the driver of the truck apparently lost control during a turn and smashed into a car that was parked in front of a residence.

“We were sitting in the living room and heard the crash. When we came out, we saw the truck speeding away. They came off Shedden to go south on Laidlaw and didn’t make the turn. It’s the second time it’s happened to us here. The last time, the (hydro) pole came down,” explained Tara Austin, a Cannington resident who recently purchased the car that was damaged.

“We called the police and a couple cruisers came out to look for the driver but couldn’t find them,”

Austin said the car going to be a gift for her son’s 16th birthday.

“We hadn’t changed the ownership over or put insurance on it yet so we have no coverage for it,” she said.

Despite the significant damage to the car, Austin noted that accident could have been far, far worse.

“My son was sitting right next to the front door. If the car hadn’t been there, the truck could have gone right into the front of our house. Everything happens for a reason. A $2,000 car isn’t worth crying over when you think of the alternatives,” she said.

“We’re glad no one was hurt and still hope the person responsible comes to see us. They will be found eventually, it’s always better when you step up and take responsibility for your mistakes.”

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Durham Regional Police at 1-888-579-1520.
